This is not the first year that the school has raised money for UNICEF; since 1998 the school has contributed more than $50,000 by encouraging students to participate in the Trick or Treat UNICEF boxes.

“Many students chose to help by collecting money using the Trick or Treat UNICEF boxes on Halloween,” said special education teacher Diane Kiernan, who added that the donations the students collected from people in the community were brought into school. “Third-grade students helped to sort the coins and bills in preparation for bringing the money to the bank to be counted.”

UNICEF is an organization that gives children around the world healthier lives and brighter futures by providing food, clean water, medicine and aid to those in need.

“We are so proud of our students for participating in this event,” Dows Lane Elementary School Principal Deborah Mariniello said. “It shows us all how we are a kind, respectful community each and every day.”

The effort was first started by Sarah Carnahan, a fondly remembered Dows Lane teacher.

“This tradition has been continued to honor Carnahan’s memory and also to enable our young students to realize that they can make a difference supporting other children in need,” said first-grade teacher Susan Buck, who now leads the program along with Kiernan.
